Plastic be the end of me

January 25, 2010

My name is Lauren and I am a merchandise maniac. I like to get the useless crap with collectors editions of games or spend actual REAL money on figurines and posters. Yeah, real money!

Sometimes I cut pictures out of magazines and I stick them up on my board to make my room look “cool”. I hang Gears of War COG tags beside my £300 worth Lara Croft (Tomb Raider) figurine and Sheva (Resident Evil 5) action figure. I bought the Metal Gear, Halo and Gears of War novels. I even got the Assassin’s Creed 2 one… but it was a bit rubbish. I proudly hang my Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare ‘Boot Camp’ dog tag like it is some kind of important accomplishment.

Thing is, I don’t really understand as to why I do it. Maybe I find secret comfort in surrounding myself with useless junk. Maybe I can’t accept the fact I have turned 23 and I am still blatantly refusing to wear make up. Maybe I am just a bit weird? Yeah, lets go with that one.

In that corny picture you see above, I am holding onto a Bayonetta Scarborough Fair Gun. Those “lucky” gamers who pre-ordered it from certain retailers got the gun and a little stand for free. What value!? In all honesty, the gun is utter crap. The paint job is horrible and I am sure the chain is going to drop off soon, along with the little plastic green gems attached.

Most have sold their guns on Ebay, netting in a worthy £50 if lucky. I’ve thought about this. I always need money, I am a dirty student after all. I also kind of want to hang onto it. Why? Silly memories I suppose.

You see, the aforementioned Call of Duty 4 dog tag is very important for me. It was the same day I debuted the UK Inside Xbox and started to go to more gaming events. I met the wonderful guys at Xbox there, some interesting people, got into the finals for the tournament and missed out in winning a rather awesome TV. That is a memory to me and one of the many reasons I enjoy writing about my experiences on the internet.

I have a name badge with “My gamertag is:” printed alongside Xbox 360 and Games for Windows logos. I’ve scrawled “atheistium” under in messy black writing. I got this badge at PAX07′. I remember having a mini discussion with someone from the GamerChix about girl gamers and such. Was a funny day.

All this random crap in the end holds memories. While I am desperate to clear out and clean up, I can’t let go. How odd.

I remember at that COD event they had mis-spelt your name to Lauron on the competition board and it made me laugh as it made your name rhyme with Moron. Hohoho.

Well, for the stuff that hold memories or reminds you of accomplishments it’s perfectly fine. Like someone who keeps photos or old trophies. 😀

The other stuff, well as long as you’re willing to part with it if need be it’s just decoration. Nothing wrong with that.
