So I got an iPhone

March 9, 2010

I’m sorry. I’m now one of those really annoying people who own an iPhone. I am also one of those really annoying people who think it’s the greatest thing ever. To be fair, I have only owned it for a few days. I needed something that could deal with my obsession with social networking and gaming news on the go. Which is why I am allowed to be blissfully amused by sliding my finger across the screen to see other apps. I’m allowed to constantly polish the screen after other people touch it. Just because I own an iPhone.

My current 'games' page.

I’ve had this feeling before and it was when I got my PSP. I kept cleaning the screen and holding down the left and right buttons as it scrolled through the XMB as it made that satisfying clicking noise when it past each section. The PSP always felt like a prestigious piece of kit, something the Nintendo DS failed upon. I felt a little important owning a PSP, much like owning an iPhone now.

The problem is that I have no idea on what is good and what isn’t. You see the popular applications are those where you pretend to drink beer or throw paper into a rubbish bin. I’m not really into that. I’m struggling to find interesting, fun and innovative games on this new platform.

I picked up Zenonia free and it turns out to be a pretty good old school RPG. DDR S, Tap Tap Revenge, N.H.K and Tumbl have all been pretty entertaining. I don’t get the appeal with DoodleJump though. Everyone has been recommending me it but it feels very pointless. I just couldn’t get into it.

I even saw Final Fantasy I and II on their earlier but at £5.99 a pop I’m not sure if I really want to pick them up. I probably will some time in the future but I just feel like I’ve picked up a new gaming platform that hasn’t found its feet yet.  I can’t find anything noteworthy to purchase. Nothing that screams out amazing.

So the point of this post is I need you to recommend me apps and games. What is good and what is just overrated. Thank you for being a total newbie.

P.S I still love Windows 😉

Zenonia Free is only a demo, the full game is pretty damn good though 🙂

    List of apps: –

    Wikipanion
    Flickr
    LinkedIn
    WordPress
    Facebook
MySpace (Meh, does anyone even use this any more?)
    Last.fm
    Beneath a Steel Sky
    Canabalt
    GeoDefense
    GeoDefense Swarm
    Peggle

    Hope that helps 🙂

You will be hooked on the iPhone.

I seriously recommend Audioboo. At PR & Events it really is the cutting edge technology to get interviews up and live before anyone else. Plus, the microphone on your iPhone is broadcast quality, don’t believe me?

Listen to one of my audioboo’s

I also recommend Tweet Deck (obviously)

Ok, three good games: Canabalt, Ragdoll Blast and Drop7. Seems boring and pricey but has been a lifesaver for me many times: National Rail app!

You might find Tube Status good (underground info updates), and Shazam is great for those “Ooh, I love this song on an advert/TV programme! What is it?” moments.

Wikipanion is much better than trying to use the Wikipedia website on the iPhone.

Finally, there is a Dominos app which makes ordering and paying for pizza far far too easy, and WC Finder can be useful in an unfamiliar town!

Also I found Twitbird to be my favourite Twitter app by MILES. I have used Tweetie and Echofon too, but although they all have some flaws Twitbird I find the most user friendly and intuitive – suspect it will come down to personal opinion though really.

So let me get this straight. And be honest. You basically bought an iPhone because I mentioned that, despite it meaning we almost got lost near Euston, I was really glad none of us had actually bought into the iPhone frenzy. Right? I mean, I’m basically right. Right?

Elis is probably my favorite iphone game. I think it’s 1.99.

A close second is Space Invaders: Infinity Gene. Space invaders, paced to your music? What else could you possibly ask for?

As for other apps, I don’t really use them. I use google services for most everything productive… I’ve used Urbanspoon like, twice (resturaunte roulette finder thingy, kinda cool).

Tweedeck is my go-to twitter app though. Syncing with the desktop client and sending tweets in the background while your browse other ones is pretty nifty.

Other than that, have fun browsing the ocean of apps in search for the best ones 🙂

    Welcome to the club.

I reccomend FlightControl, Minigore, Pocket God, Let’s Golf! and Copter.

I’ve got an iPod Touch (not an iPhone, because Vodafone IE don’t have it yet, boo-hiss!), but I’m thirding that Canabalt shout. Such an addictive game. Play the Flash version first, and if you can see yourself losing 10 minutes of public transportation time playing it, it’s well worth the money.

I use Evernote as well sometimes, if I’m away from my computer and feel the need to write up some good idea, just write it in Evernote and it’ll sync to your computer afterwards (you can do the same with Video and Photos as well, but as I’m not on iPhone and don’t have a camera, I use it only for the writing part).

Echofon for Twitter, Canabalt, Doodle Jump and Angry Birds are probably the best games, for my money.

Like angles says angry birds at work were all playing it (59p) and must be good for 4-5 hours solid play if not more superb.

For keeping up with gaming news which you mentioned you wanted the iPhone for I recommend game gazing (free)
