I’ve been Pokéwalking

April 4, 2010

I’m back in my Poké-paradise, receiving Pokémon Heart Gold on the Nintendo DS for review. Did you know that the Pokéwalker is possibly the greatest thing ever? Okay, a little exaggeration there but if Nintendo’s strategy was to get me to walk more then they have god-damn succeed.

For example, this morning while doing a clean around my room I was packing my wash-bag with clothes to take to the laundrette downstairs. Before heading outside – which would have been a 3 minute trip there and back – I turned on my DS and transferred my newly captured Pikachu onto the Pokéwalker just to collect some Watts. Yesterday, when tripping to the supermarket, I nearly walked for 15 mins rather than grab my free cheeky bus back to the flat just to gather more watts. If it wasn’t for the heavy shopping bags I had, I would have done it.

As I’ve been pottering around the flat, the Pokéwalker is snug in my back pocket. It’s strange that I’m doing this and I can only imagine what people would think but I love Pokémon. I really, really do. There is something about the abundance of tiny, cute and imaginative creatures that keeps me coming back with each iteration.

This is kind of a short blog post, as I’m a little all over the place today. You must (and I mean must) check out the Gamespot UK podcast as I was on it this week. What else? Hmm, I don’t know actually! I’ll talk more in detail about my Gamespot internship maybe at the end. Would make more sense. One thing I can say is that it has really justified how much I want to do this. How much I want it and how I think I need to work even harder to earn it.

Anyway, I have Pokémon to catch!

I’m loving Pokemon HeartGold, though I must admit that I’ve been cheating with the Pokewalker. I found a few techniques where I can just move my hand around and it picks it up as steps, so yeah, I’m lazy, ha ha.

Though I did start doing leg-lifts with it. Maybe Pikachu and gang will get me in shape after all 😛

Man, the pokewalker is such a good invention. Nintendo finally making decent use of their ‘get fit with gaming attitude’ in a way that actual gamers may appreciate!

I’ve been walking places a bit more, jogging on the spot, and doing all kinds of things to earn more volts. Although taking it out to the pub with you could be kinda socially awkward I guess (although it wasn’t tonight. Hurrah for keeping it in your sock!)

Good to see the Pokewalker is getting people up on their feet more. Well… those who didn’t just resort to cheating. 😀

Funny how Heart Gold and Soul Silver just came out here and no less than a month later we’ve got Black and White announced from Nintendo.
